Fernando Santos é o mentor da galeria de arte com o seu nome - a Galeria Fernando Santos - uma das primeiras galerias de arte a abrir no Porto, (já há alguns anos, na década de 90) e que recentemente viu mais um dos seus sonhos tornar-se realidade, com a abertura, na mesma rua da galeria e em pleno circuito das artes, de um restaurante de topo com um conceito inovador, aliando arte e gastronomia - o restaurante Oficina.

Fernando Santos is the mentor of an art gallery with his name - Galeria Fernando Santos - being one of the first art galleries to open in Porto, some years ago already) and who saw recently one of his dreams come true with the opening - in the same street as the art gallery and in the art circuit - of a top restaurant with an innovative concept, combing art and gastronomy, and already in the worlds mouth - Oficina restaurant.

Fernando Santos é natural de Amarante e sempre conviveu com arte desde cedo - o pai trabalhava no museu de Amarante, e foi também lá que abriu a sua primeira galeria, tinha 20 anos.
no Porto, estreou-se com a Galeria Nasoni, na Rua D. Manuel II, mudando-se passados 3 anos, em 1993, para um armazém existente na Rua Miguel Bombarda e criando aí a Galeria com o seu nome - Galeria Fernando Santos - numa altura em que a realidade do circuito das artes era bem diferente da dos dias de hoje, e contribuindo com grande peso para a criação de arte em Portugal.

Fernando Santos was born in Amarante, and arts was always part of his life, as his father worked at the Amarante Museum, and he himself opened his first gallery at the age of 20.
in Porto, he first opened Galria Nasoni, at D. Manuel II street, and 3 years after, in 1993, moved to an old warehouse in Miguel Bombarda street, opening the Galery with his name - Galeira Fernando Santos - in a time the art circuit was completely different from nowadays.

in the 90's there were very few art galleries, , and the artists were selling very few, so the galleries started growing and creating that market.
"about 1996 Miguel Bombarda street started to have its own protagonism, there were about 15 to 20 galleries and a greta euphoria with a lot of interested institutions. after that there was a great period of crisis, and a lot of galleries had to close. The artistic boom did not follow the touristic boom in Porto.

mas penso que chegou uma altura em que o destino "Miguel Bombarda" passou a fazer parte da rotina dos portuenses, pelo menos na altura das chamadas "inaugurações", numa dinâmica de muita animação nas ruas, nas galerias e nas lojas, e que o circuito Miguel Bombarda ganhou novo fôlego, certo? Eu pelo menos lembro-me bem de nunca faltar a uma inauguração: ) Isso foi bom para as Galerias?
- sim, claro que sim. já a partir do Porto 2001 (Porto Capital Europeia da Cultura) nós propusémos à câmara ter uma parte da rua pedonal, o que aconteceu, e isso deu mais visibilidade à rua e embelezou-a.
neste momento na rua não existem só galerias, há já muitas lojas e alguns locais de restauração, e tudo isso atrai mais pessoas para aqui.

a parceria com a Porto Lazer foi e continua a ser muito importante, e as chamadas Inaugurações Simultâneas, compreendendo 6 eventos por ano - trazem de facto à rua uma dinâmica muito interessante.
não quer dizer com isso que seja nesses dias que vendemos mais, mas é sempre um dia muito bom.
tenho também de mencionar a chegada de Rui Moreira à Câmara do Porto, uma vez que Rui Moreira tem na cultura um dos pilares para o seu mandato, e isso tem sido muito bom também para nós.
Como funciona a escolha dos artistas para a Galeria? tem assim algum artista ou exposição que recorde em particular?
nós apostamos muito nos artistas nacionais, mas também em alguns artistas internacionais. e claro que a Galeria vai ao encontro dos artistas com os quais se identifica, tentando apostar nos artistas certos.
posso-me gabar de ter excelentes relações com todos os artistas com quem trabalho, e de gostar de todas as exposições. trabalhamos actualmente com cerca de 40 artistas.
em relação às exposições, posso falar da primeira exposição de todas, porque a primeira é sempre marcante e que foi com com Júlio Resende, mas todas as outras me deram enorme prazer e eu acabo por ganhar grandes laços de amizade com todos os artistas que aqui expõem.

I think there was a time when the destiny "Miguel Bombarda" was part of the routine of each porto inhabitant, at least at the opening day, in a nice dynamic between galleries, shops and streets, and that the Bombarda Circuit gained a new life, right? At least I remember not to miss any of those opening days :) Was this good for the galleries?
yes, of course. by the time of Porto 2001 - Porto Cultural Capital - we proposed some pedestrian part here at the street, and that was great for street visibility, and also the street turned more good looking.
at this moment the street has not only galleries, but many shops and restaurants, and that brings more and more people to this street.
partnership with Porto Lazer was of course (and still is) very important - the creation of "The Openings Day" - happening 6 times in a year - brings to the street great dynamic and good moments.
it does not mean that in those days we sell the most, but it is a good day, anyway.
I also have to mention Rui Moreira being the mayor, as he has in culture a flag for his mandate, which is very good for us.
How do you choose the artists for your Gallery? is there a special artists or exhibition you remember in particular?
we always bet on national artists, and on some international artists. But of course the gallery meets the artists with whom it identifies the most, and we try to have the right artists.
I am proud to say that I have excellent relationships with all the artists with whom I work, and I like all the exhibitions. We work now with around 40 artists.
I can mention the first exhibition, because the first is always very important, - with Júlio Resende - but all the others were great and I become friend of most of the artist who exhibit here.

vamos agora falar um bocadinho sobre o restaurante - o Oficina.
o Oficina é um sonho antigo, um sonho de ter um restaurante e de querer ligar a arte à gastronomia, por achar que ambos os conceitos encaixam muito bem, e que em ambos os casos estamos a falar de arte e de criação, de artistas e de criadores.
foi um processo que durou 6 anos, desde o momento em que adquiri uma antiga oficina automóvel, em 2010, e me decidi a restaurá-la, sempre com a preocupação de nunca perder as suas memórias, e sem alterar a história do seu espaço.
chamei amigos cujo trabalho admiro e no qual confio, como é o caso do Rodrigo Patrício para a parte da restauração e arquitetura, e do Paulo Lobo, para a decoração de interiores.
na parte da cozinha, eu queria alguém que trabalhasse bem a comida portuguesa, e o Chef Marco Gomes é um exemplo e uma grande referência disso, e é ele o meu sócio e quem está à frente da cozinha.
o Oficina abriu a 15 de Setembro de 2016.

let's talk now a little bit about the restaurant - Oficina.
Oficina is an old dream, a dream of having a restaurant, and to gather art and gastronomy. Because I think both concepts go very well together, in both concepts we have the artist and the creator.
it was a process that took 6 years, from the moment I bought and old car workshop, in 2010, and decided to restore it, always with the worry not to loose its memories nor the history of the place.
I called some friends whose work I admire - for architecture Rodrigo Patrício and for the interior design Paulo Lobo.
in the kitchen I wanted someone who works he portuguese food, and Chef Marco Gomes is a reference in that. He is now my partner and he is leading the kitchen.
Oficina opened on September 15th 2016.

Já cá tivémos o Pedro Cabrita Reis, e um dos pratos foi "Cabrito à reis", e o Maestro Vitorino de Almeida, com a "Sinfonia de Bacalhau", por exemplo.
"o Oficina é um espaço para as pessoas serem felizes, e está um espaço muito bonito. tanto poderia estar no Porto como em qualquer outra parte do mundo, não é só um restaurante, é um espaço oficina. e a crítica já se tem ouvido, e tem sido muito boa.:)"

Um local favorito no Porto?
o Palácio de Cristal. é mesmo aqui ao lado, e é onde eu praticamente todos os dias faço a minha caminhada matinal, pois também moro aqui perto. Faz-me respirar ar puro, sinto-me bem com a envolvência do ambiente.
ver o nascer do dia ao pé do rio, e olhar para a ribeira de Gaia é mágico. acho que o palácio de Cristal é o pulmão da cidade.
Gosta do Porto porque?
Gosto do Porto porque é autêntico, tem raça, é hospitaleiro, tem encanto e é genuíno.
Eu não sou natural do Porto, mas estou cá há 30 anos e é a minha cidade. Adoro o Porto. Já tive duas galerias em Lisboa, mas o meu melhor momento era quando chegava ao Porto. É das cidades mais bonitas que conheço.
Se não vivesse no Porto, imagina-se a viver em alguma outra cidade?
em Paris. é uma cidade onde também me sinto muito bem e onde sou também muito feliz. ando muito a pé e sempre que lá vou descubro sempre algo de novo. É uma cidade de luz, de cultura.

a favourite place in Porto?
Palácio de Cristal. it is close to here, and is where I most of the days do my my morning walk, as I also live here close by. I smell the fresh air, I fell really good with all the atmosphere.
and to see the sunrise close to the river, looking at Gaia is marvellous. I think Palácio de Cristal is the city's lung.
the reason you like Porto?
Porto is an authentic city, has its own race, is welcoming, is charming, and it is genuine.
I am not natural from Porto, but live here for 30 years, and it is my city. I love Porto.
I had two galleries in Lisbon in the past, and the moments I really loved were when I was returning...It is one of the most beautiful cities I know.
if you were not living in Porto, could you imagine living in another city?
in Paris. I really feel well in Paris, I always walk a lot and every time I go there I discover something new. I am happy there, it is a city of light, of culture.
Um sonho?
o restaurante foi um dos meus grandes sonhos e já o concretizei.
falando de coisas mais íntimas, eu tenho dois filhos, e o meu grande sonho é que eles sejam tão felizes como eu sou.
eu sou muito feliz, e quero continuar a ter uma actividade e a exercê-la com saúde e correcção. Isso faz parte da felicidade.

A dream?
well, the opening of the restaurant was my big dream, and I already fulfilled it...
but speaking about more personal things, I have two sons, and what I really want is that they are so happy as I am.
I am very happy. And I want to go on having an activity, working correctly and being healthy. This is part of happiness as well.
